This Summer’s Hottest Grooming Trends for Men

The summer months oftentimes make hair unmanageable. Sticky, humid weather is the destroyer of all of our hair dreams, but were not the only ones who are struggling—so are the guys! Once summertime hits, it’s important for men to remember that the right products and beard oils can go a long way.

Luckily, Head stylist and Owner, Janet Jackson knows how to solve all of our frizzy hair problems with the season’s hottest grooming tips and tricks for men!

Messy Man Bob:

This style can work on those with any thickness or texture. The key to getting it right is making sure that you’re asking your barber or hair stylist for a cut that will complement your face shape and hair texture. The key in maintaining this look is to get regular trims. Just because you’re growing it doesn’t mean you can skip out on trims.

All you have to do is spritz all the hair with water focusing on the roots for nice grit and hold. Men don’t usually care for neatness, and the look needs to look chill! Rake the hair up with your fingers and secure with a rubber band. Wrap the hair around, and secure it with two bobby pins. Then, clean up the hairline and side burns with paste.

Products to use

Wavy hair

You need to have slightly damp hair for this style or you can always spritz it with a water bottle. Then, spray volumizing product all over the hair and use the dryer to blast it. Use light oil spray all over for shine—rake your fingers and scrunch hair for natural looking texture.

Straight hair

Men too can use flat or curling irons, or simply wrap the hair up in a top knot at night to create natural looking texture. Regardless of what technique you use you can finish off your look with a little salt spray for a messy matte effect or soft wax, pomade to define texture and curl.

Beard maintenance

There is a right way to approach the task of hair trimming and removal, and it differs for each body part. You also want to make sure you are cleaning up your neck when you are maintaining your beard.

Shave the front of the neck or trim it whenever you clean up your facial hair. Regardless of your beard length, you need to help define it by removing the neckbeard. Imagine a “U” shape that connects behind both ears and meets at a point above the Adam’s apple (two fingers above it). Everything below this imaginary “U” must go. You could also use an electric shaver on this area, as you might for your face. Remember to use toner or aftershave to prevent razor bumps.

Beard oils are also very important to achieve silky soft facial hair.

Curly & Colourful Hair:

This look is about keeping it super short on the sides and longer on the top.

To maintain this hair type you need to add a lot of moisture and hydration to keep it soft and looking its best! Use moisture shampoo and conditioner and then spray a hair oil to maintain this look during the summer. You can also use a styling sponge to create texture.

Coloured tips

Colour is a huge trend this summer and you will definitely be seeing a lot of blondes and pastel colours. In the 90s, we saw a lot of colour on the tips and don’t be scared to do that again this year. If you don’t want to commit to this colourful style all summer long, opt for a hair makeup alternative. They come in a variety of fun colours for everybody.

Quiffed Grey Hair:

The quiff is a classic hairstyle that is still lingering around and can work on shorter hair too!

To achieve this, wet the hair and use your fingers or a comb to push the hair in the direction that you want it in. A tip to keep this look modern and fresh is to not have a clear part. If you’re in a hurry you can leave it wet, but if your hair needs some more taming you can use a blow dryer to dry it in position. Most guys can just let their hair air dry with product and they will be good to go.

To embrace your natural greys, I suggest using a purple shampoo and conditioner. This will keep your hair from going yellow in the sun and it will also keep your grey colour looking vibrant and shiny! Five Ways to Refresh Dull Natural Curls

There’s nothing worse then spending the night perfectly styling and defining your curls for the next day, only to wake up to undefined, frizzy curls. If there were a magic product to keep your curls defined and moisturized through a night of tossing and turning, we’d all own it. For now, we’re offering you these tips to refresh your curls quickly and efficiently during your morning routine!

1. Water

Dull curls is typically caused by dryness; and because of this sometimes the key to refreshing dull curls is moisture. If you’ve already applied leave-ins, stylers or gels to your hair in the days before, these products may reactivate with a spritz of water and scrunching or finger coiling.

2. Leave-In Conditioner (in Spray form)

You can either purchase a leave-in conditioner spray or make your own by mixing your favorite leave-in conditioner and water. Either way, a light spritz of leave-in conditioner can moisturize and refresh your hair for the day.

3. Gel

For curls that have lost definition overnight or throughout the day, gel can help provide definition and help your style last much longer than it would without it. Simply spray some water or a leave-in conditioner spray on your hair to add moisture to your curls, and then apply a minimal amount of gel to the section or curls to regain definition. You can either scrunch or finger coil afterwards to bring your curl pattern back to life. Finish it off by air-drying or blow-drying the section of hair on a low, cool setting.

4. Finger Coils

Transitioning hair has a much harder time holding definition and moisture than healthy natural hair. Try applying a styling product to your curls, then twirl your hair around your finger until it appears curly once more. Since transitioning hair has a harder time retaining moisture, it’s better to let your hair air dry vs. blow-drying.

5. Perm Rods or Flexi Rods

If you’re trying to refresh a perm-rod set or a flexi-rod set, you want to rewrap the section of hair quickly especially if this is during your morning routine. Simply apply a setting product to your hair, then re-roll the undefined section onto the rod to reset. Then blow-dry on the lowest heat setting until the section is cool and dry. You can then unravel the hair to reveal the defined curl once more.

The Benefits of Protective Styling

Summer is ending and fall is soon approaching! With the colder temperatures drawing nearer, it may be time to re-evaluate your natural hair routine. Colder weather brings dryer tresses, and dry hair can lead to split ends and breakage. But not to worry! A great way to retain length and avoid breakage is protective styling!

Protective styling can be any style that tucks away and protects your ends from the elements, which prevents breakage and promotes length retention. It also keeps hair from being constantly manipulated (styled), which can also cause breakage. Natural hair can be somewhat sensitive to changes in weather. Usually in colder temperatures, hair tends to break as it can become dry and lose moisture necessary for growing and maintaining healthy hair. Protective styles can shelter your hair from dry weather, as long as your hair is moisturized while in a protective style.

There are several types of protective styles including buns, weaves, braids, wigs and twists. Some of these styles can keep your hair protected for several weeks, and some naturals see a lot of growth when the style is taken down. The key to this however, is that your hair is moisturized while under a protective style. If your hair is dry, and is not moisturized while in the protective style, you may actually see more breakage and split ends as a result.

Remember to never install any of these styles too tightly, or for too long. Tightly installed styles can cause thinning or balding edges, and sometimes this damage can’t be reversed. When styles are installed for too long, it may cause matted, tangled hair. Be very gentle when taking down these styles, you don’t want to pull or cut your own hair, as that can cause balding in certain areas of your hair. Try not to keep a style in for longer than 60 days, and moisturize and wash your natural hair if possible.

Co-Washing 101

Don’t be grossed out, but I’ve never been that into washing my hair. After shampooing, my natural curls are clean, yes, but also slightly dried out and frizzy. (Not a good look.) I prefer to do a thorough rinse and pile on the leave-in conditioner. In that sense, I’ve been on the co-washing bandwagon since before it was cool — or a major product category.

Co-washing (which stands for conditioning-washing or conditioner-only washing) is exactly what is sounds like: washing your hair with a cleansing conditioner. It eliminates the use of shampoo, which usually contains harsh detergents that can strip oils from hair. And because curls are naturally drier in texture (their spiral pattern makes it difficult for oils to travel down strands), shampooing them can backfire. Cleansing conditioners, on the other hand, are praised for what they lack: foaming agents, sulfates and silicone.

So does this news mean curly-haired women should never shampoo again? Well, no. “Every curl is different, and people have different lifestyles,” says Janet Jackson, celebrity hairstylist (not the singer) and owner of JouJou Hair Studio. “If a woman works out all the time, [frequent] washing can be drying, so a co-wash would work for her.” Your hair care routine — hair oils, mousses, etc. — should also be taken into account. “The products that you use to enhance your curls on a daily basis will build up, so you do need to shampoo at some point to remove them,” Jackson says. I personally co-wash two to three times a week, and I see the best results when I take the time to section my hair, work the product from roots to ends and let it marinate for a few minutes before rinsing. I also use a clarifying shampoo once a week to reset —  okay, every 10 days. But my curls aren’t complaining.

HEAT & YOUR HAIR

Though you may not realize it high temperatures can be remarkably dangerous for your hair health. Whether it be through blow drying, flat iron straightening or hot curling, any heat that exceeds the boiling point of water can cause severe damage to your hair

WHAT KIND OF DAMAGE?

One of the biggest consequences of high temperatures on your hair is the loss of moisture. Water molecules provide essential support to the structure and properties of your hair. Evaporation of water molecules can alter your protein structure, which can result in your hair losing bounce and being more prone to breakage. Additionally, the loss of water molecules can change your curl pattern and cause frizz. This type of damage is exceptionally common with frequent blow drying on hair. 

The strands of your hair are complex and they obtain the majority of their properties from keratin protein structures in the cuticle and cortex. The softening of the keratin and conformational changes in the protein of your hair can happen through heat degradation. Protein damage can potentially affect the strength, texture, curl and shine of your hair. Oxidation of pigment particles are another risk of high temperatures.

HOW CAN YOU PROTECT YOURSELF? 

Heat protectants are products that can reduce thermal trauma to your hair by offer insulation from high temperatures. These products can offer a reduction in moisture loss as well as maximize and seal in moisture, as water molecules are essential to your hair.

It’s important to understand that although heat protectants can offer a reduction in damage to your hair, they can not completely prevent it. Meaning, if you frequently use heat styling on your hair frequent damage will occur, forcing you to cut off the affected areas. If you want to maintain or enhance the length of your hair, then it is inadvisable to use heat often.

10 PRODUCTS FOR HAIR GROWTH

Hair Growth is probably the number one thing all hair types can agree on that they strive for the most. Now, we must admit that there are numerous factors that contribute to whether or not your hair is growing, like blocked pores from product build up or a dirty scalp or simply not giving your body enough fluids.

There are a few products that you can add to your daily regiment that will stimulate hair growth.

1. EGGS 

Eggs are rich with all the essential vitamins and minerals (including but not limited to zinc, iron and selenium) Used on your scalp, eggs can increase oxygen, blood production and healthy cell division.

2. PEPPERMINT OIL 

Peppermint oil penetrates the scalp and stimulates hair, thereby increasing oxygen production. Be sure to dilute this strongly concentrated oil before gently massaging it onto your scalp and allowing it rest (covered) for 20-30 minutes.

3. STINGING NETTLE

This herb is packed with useful nutrients. Stinging Nettle is known to combat a problematic hormone that contributes to hair loss (DHT) as well as it as powerful regenerative powers for your hair. Whether you use it in your hair overnight or create a tea rinse, this herb can combat hair loss and give your curls a boost!

4. LAVENDER OIL 

With powerful antibacterial properties there are a myriad of ways you can use lavender oil to stimulate hair growth. It helps to reduce excessive dandruff, keeps your scalp clean and your pores open.

5. APPLE CIDER VINEGAR 

Apple Cider Vinegar is perfect for eliminating build up in your hair as it restores balance and stimulates growth. Product build up is something that people often don’t consider, but it can easily disrupt the pH levels of your scalp which then effect the growth of your hair. Try an Apple Cider Vinegar rinse by mixing ACV with water.

6. ROSEMARY OIL 

Known for scalp stimulating properties making it one of the most effective oils in hair growth,  rosemary oil is perfect for encouraging blood circulation in your scalp. It’s a good idea to dilute it a bit with another oil (like jojoba oil, which is the closest oil to what humans produce naturally)  and massage it in your scalp.

 

7. SAGE OIL 

Sage oil increases blood circulation and removes excessive sebum from the scalp.

8. ONION JUICE 

Due to the high sulfur content onion juice is really effective in stimulating and increasing blood circulation. Blend Onions, Apply to your hair and leave in for 15 minutes. You’ll be sure to see great improvements.

9. ALOE VERA 

Last but certainly not least. Aloe Vera is rich with over 20 minerals and an overwhelming amount of vitamins. It’s antibacterial properties eliminate oil build up, and allow your pores to breathe. Aloe Vera also aids in the overproduction of sebum. Excessive Sebum ( a substance that secretes from your scalp) can slow hair growth, aloe vera is perfect for reducing the overproduction of sebum.

Take Your Vitamins!: Vitamins That Encourage Healthy Hair Growth

There are a lot of vitamins out there that can help with healthy hair growth, but we will be focusing on the main four Vitamin A, Biotin, Vitamin E, and Folic Acid. You can either take these orally in pill form, or get it from certain foods. While it would be easier to take the vitamins orally, it is highly suggested to find these vitamins in your everyday foods.

Vitamin A-

Vitamin A helps to produce healthy sebum, an oily substance secreted by the scalp, which keeps hair from drying out and breaking off.
